Tjampi Desert Weavers Art Lesson FORM

 3rd Grade
Objective: TLW create an animal by weaving yarn similar to the Tjampi Desert Weavers.
Sub-objective:
  • TLW understand who the Tjampi Desert Weavers.
  • TLW  create a form of an animal out of 22x28 sheet of newsprint paper.
  • TLW will make balls (1.5") of yarn. Prep work. Fine motor skills.
  • TLW weave colorful yarn onto the animal using the the technique similar to the Tjampi Desert Weavers.
Get the students to understand a skein or hank of yarn. Pull from the inside middle. This is pretty cool lesson. Usually my students who have to work extra hard to understand reading, writing, and math will rise up and master making a ball of yarn! If you have a child having a hard time being still, rolling a ball of yarn will give them peace.

Making an animal (let's work with a bird form) will be easier for average level learners than for the higher level learners. Higher level learners tend to over think the process. Average and lower level learners just do it. They are my champions! They are not afraid of failing. Failing has happened to them in most subjects of elementary school.

The yarn is not attached with tape, glue, staples, or any other means to the animal form. The weaving goes from head to tail and back until all yarn has completely covered the animal form.

Materials:
  • newsprint paper (22x28")
  • masking tape for the paper animal
  • yarn (several colors) Prep (have students make balls of yarn)

Extension: Draw the animal and label.
