Suspended Coffee Art Lesson 3rd Grade
Advanced Student (Chalk pastels, Oil pastels, markers, and color construction paper).

3rd and 4th Grade
Objective: TLW create a design promoting the "Suspended Coffee" campaign.
Sub-Objectives:
  • TLW gain an understanding about the "Suspended Coffee" in Europe and in the United States.
  • TLW design a coffee/cocoa cup.
  • TLW choose type of media and paper to use on the artwork.
  • TLW use the art elements line, shape, color, texture, space, and value in their artwork.
This lesson is twofold. Learning how to create a design to promote a cause and learn what true giving without praise or a thank you really is.
We discuss how they can give without money being part of the process. They start to list the obvious, donating money, food, clothing and such to picking up a drop item, trash, or pushing in a forgotten chair. Each giving is as important as those of money, food, or clothing. Time is more valuable than anything.
Here is an interesting video that your students will be interested in. Giving.
Materials available for choice:

I have found that making the materials available everyday easier if you have a set place for them. I have a "wet" table with paints, brushes, containers, and "nasty" rags. A "dry" table with oil pastels, markers, chalk pastels, color pencils, yarn, and crayons. Under the "dry" table are the cardboard boxes with an assortment of cardboard scrap pieces, poster board scrap pieces and a box of color tissue paper. Another section of the room has the "paper" table. This table has several types and sizes of paper to choose.
  • White paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Color construction paper
  • Oil pastels
  • Chalk pastels
  • Watercolor
  • Tempera paints
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Color tissue paper
  • Coffee filters
