POp ArT carbon style 3rd Grade Art Lesson

P0p ArT Carbon Style

Objective: TLW create a pop art that reflect his/her times or interests.
Sub-objective:
  • TLW draw four different items that are simple in design.
  • TLW make a carbon to trace the drawing. (Presentation will make this part magical)
  • TLW trace the original design four times (4 copies).
  • TLW apply color using a variety of media.

This is a cool lesson on pop art. First introduce students to Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, or Jasper Johns. Let the students relate to pop art by discussing things that are popular with them. Seasonal subject (like the cocoa cup with a snowman on it) and the latest craze will come up first.
Have them draw four different popular ideas. Stress the need to keep the idea simple. The lesson will become more complex and time consuming if it is not simple.
FUN FUN FUN

Present the carbon method without disclosing how it is done. On the back of your (teacher) example color the back with oil pastel (not to heavy). Doing this on the overhead projector is best. You show the blank paper going under your drawing. Trace your drawing and reveal the outline on the clean paper you placed underneath. DO SHOW THE BACK OF YOUR DRAWING! The students paying attention will be surprised. Funny, these kids have no idea what carbon copy is. Have them problem solve "how" you did it. Their responses are priceless. "Magic" pencil is the best.

Materials available for choice:

I have found that making the materials available everyday easier if you have a set place for them. I have a "wet" table with paints, brushes, containers, and "nasty" rags. A "dry" table with oil pastels, markers, chalk pastels, color pencils, yarn, and crayons. Under the "dry" table are the cardboard boxes with an assortment of cardboard scrap pieces, poster board scrap pieces and a box of color tissue paper. Another section of the room has the "paper" table. This table has several types and sizes of paper to choose.
  • White paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Color construction paper
  • Oil pastels
  • Chalk pastels
  • Watercolor
  • Tempera paints
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Color tissue paper
  • Coffee filters
