Fine Motor Skills "Abstract Roller Coaster" Kindergarten/ 1st Grade Art Lesson

This is a fabulous lesson for kindergarten and 1st grader art students. It can get boring for the students to only cut paper. Introduce the roller coaster concept (acting and gesturing). Have several colors of construction paper with lines on them. Lines: straight, curved, zigzag, swirl, thick and thin. Ziplock bag to store their cut paper in. This will be the only lesson with just cutting.

In the following weeks teach other lessons with color, lines, and shapes. When they are finished with other lessons they can select new papers to cut more lines and shapes.

Once the students have plenty of cut lines and shapes the Abstract Roller Coaster artwork is ready for construction. Demonstrate a variety methods besides flat application to add interest. Have a board with different ways of attaching the paper. The students can analyze the attachments and problem solve on their own.

Differentiation:
One star- student cuts straight, curved, zig zag. Applies paper 3 different ways .
Two star- student cuts straight, curved, zig zag, swirl. Applies paper 4-5 different ways.
Three star- student cuts straight, curved, zig zag, swirl, and designs their own lines to cut. Applies paper 5 differnt ways with multiple hoops and twists in the paper.
