Create an Urban landscape First Grade ART LESSON

Create an urban landscape
1st  Grade
Create
Elements: line, shape, color, texture, and space.

Objective: TLW create an urban landscape (cityscape) using a variety of media.

This first graders have had a ball creating their own urban landscape. The presentation started with different photographs of an urban landscape in black and white as well as vivid colors from sunsets. Keep it short and sweet so the student's creativity can be authentic.

Materials available for choice:

I have found that making the materials available everyday easier if you have a set place for them. I have a "wet" table with paints, brushes, containers, and "nasty" rags. A "dry" table with oil pastels, markers, chalk pastels, color pencils, yarn, and crayons. Under the "dry" table are the cardboard boxes with an assortment of cardboard scrap pieces, poster board scrap pieces and a box of color tissue paper. Another section of the room has the "paper" table. This table has several types and sizes of paper to choose.
  • White paper
  • Black construction paper
  • Color construction paper
  • Oil pastels
  • Chalk pastels
  • Watercolor
  • Tempera paints
  • Crayons
  • Markers
  • Color tissue paper
  • Coffee filters

Questioning:
  • How would you draw this building?
  • What textures do you see? How would you create that texture.
  • What colors do you see? Why is it that color? What medium would you use to create that color?
Proficient student (unfinished graphite, tempera, and marker)

Emerging student (Crayon/texture plate, oil pastels, chalk pastels)

Students may want to outline their work with a sharpie marker. Outlining will help develop their fine motor skills.
Here are some samples of 1st graders working on their urban landscape.
